Karma yoga is a mental discipline that allows a person to carry out his or her duties as a service to the entire world, as a path to enlightenment. When we see one event followed by another, or sometimes happening simultaneously with another, we expect this sequence or co-existence to recur. By law here is meant the tendency of a series to repeat itself. Wherever there is a cause, the effect must be produced this necessity cannot be resisted, and this law of Karma, is true throughout the whole universe. Thus the law of Karma means the law of causation, of inevitable cause and sequence. Any work, any action, any thought that produces an effect is called a Karma. Karma Yoga has often been called the yoga of cause and effect, or, the yoga of sowing and reaping, but it is really the yoga of action. ![]() But in karma yoga we have simply to do with the word ‘karma’ as meaning work. In connection with metaphysics, it sometimes means the effects of which our past actions were the causes. Technically this word also means the effects of actions. The word ‘karma’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘kri’, which means to do all action is karma. Swami Vivekananda’s Ideal of Karma-Yoga and Its Relevance in Life
